Andries Charl Cilliers was born on 21 November 1933 in Stellenbosch, where his
father, A. C. Cilliers, was professor of Physics at Stellenbosch University. Andries Cilliers
studied at the universities of Stellenbosch (BA LLB), Oxford (MA 1962) and
UNISA (LLD, summa cum laude, 1976. Thesis: The South West Africa Mandate in United Nations Context.)

He was married to Bettie Liebenberg, who is a journalist, in 1960. They have two
sons and two daughters.
Hobbies: Photography, reading (especially history, philosophy and cosmology), and
listening to classical music
